Beginner's Guide: How Do You Play the Tou Jie Dao Trading Game?
What Kind of Game Is This?
Tou Jie Dao is a trading strategy game built around the 64 Hexagrams of the I Ching. Over 12 Rounds, 2–8 players buy and sell four Element Cards: Wood, Water, Fire and Earth. At the end of each Round, one Heaven Card is flipped over — each card corresponds to one hexagram — and the Heaven Card changes the Market Prices of the Five Elements. When the 12 Rounds are over, the player with the highest Net Worth wins (cash plus the market value of your Element Cards). Does that sound abstract? Then think of it this way: it is a stock-market game of buying low and selling high, played with the divination cards of China's ancient sages.
The Four Core Rules: Understood in 10 Minutes
- Trading the Five Elements — Each of the four Element Cards — Wood, Water, Fire and Earth — has its own Market Price, and you can buy from and sell to the market. Normally, each kind of Element Card is limited to one trade per Round (Fire Cards can be traded twice). Buying low and selling high is the only formula for profit.
- Heaven Card Settlement — At the end of each Round, a Heaven Card is revealed (one of the 64 Hexagrams of the I Ching), and its hexagram changes the Market Prices of the Five Elements. Those who can read hexagrams can predict how prices will move in the next Round.
- Survival Costs — At Settlement, if you hold no Water, you must pay a Living Cost of 1 gold; if you hold no Earth, you must pay a Rent of 1 gold. Survive first — talk about making money later.
- Loans on Integrity — Each player has 3 Integrity Tokens, and each token lets you borrow 4 gold from the market (12 gold at most in total). Money borrowed must be repaid, with Interest on top — a Loan is leverage, but it is also a trap.
Starting the Game: Three Steps
Before the game begins, you perform the Divination: flip over one Heaven Card to decide the starting player and the trading direction (clockwise / counterclockwise), then deal the cards according to the order of the hexagrams. Each player receives 5 gold in starting capital, 3 Integrity Tokens and one random Role. Every Role has its own special skill — the Scholar, for example, can convert Wood into gold, and Laozi is exempt from the Water fee — which is the key to turning a game around.
What Should a Beginner Do in the First Round?
In your very first Round, do three things: ① buy one Water Card — that guarantees you will not be charged a Living Cost at Settlement; ② look at the Market Prices — memorize the current prices of Wood, Water, Fire and Earth so you can tell "low" from "high"; ③ think through the Heaven Card trend — which Element will the next Heaven Card push up? Positioning early is what makes you a winner.
Summary: Five Principles for Beginners
- Secure your survival first (Water and Earth), then chase profit.
- Market Prices change — understanding the Heaven Card matters more than buying blindly.
- Buy low and sell high; never chase peaks or dump in a panic.
- Loans must be repaid with principal and Interest — never treat leverage as free money.
- Using a Role Skill at the right moment beats buying one more card.
